Once widespread in the wild throughout much of Japan and mainland Asia, the crane (tsuru) is these days more often spotted flying across screens, temple walls and kimono. They are monogamous and can live to be up to 25-30 years (longer in captivity), so they symbolize fidelity, good luck and longevity. This is why Japanese cranes or their colours (black, red and white) are familiar motifs at wedding ceremonies.
