The jian is a double-edged straight sword used during the last 2,500 years in China. The first Chinese sources that mention the jian date to the 7th century BC. Our tai Chi swords follow this tradition and are jian. Historically one-handed versions of these blades are 17.7 to 31.5 inches in length, and the average weight of a sword was would be about 1.5 to 2 pounds. Our swords vary in length with blades ranging from 13-30 inches and the weights range from 2-2.5 lbs in the tradition of the old style Chinese jian.
