Why Karma Sutra
One answer might be the fact that the text offers readers relief from sexual guilt. After all, the book is built on the premise that lovemaking is a necessary and sacred aspect of everyday life. When the Kama Sutra was written in the 1st century, the people of India believed that there were three basic aims in life, obtaining material goods artha, which assured everyday survival, erotic practices kama, which assured the survival of the species, and rules of behavior dharma, which assured that we all get along. Originally, the Kama Sutra was meant to be a compilation of sutras loosely translated as principles or rules on erotic practices that were considered mandatory lessons, especially for the men of India.
Another Reason for Karma Sutra
Another reason for its broad based appeal is the detailed descriptions of lovemaking positions, which are also portrayed through the explicit Indian illustrations in the Illustrated Kama Sutra, translated by Sir Richard Burton, and through the tasteful photos of nude models in Anne Hoopers Kama Sutra. Those who are not contortionists or yoga students need fear not, In most peoples minds, the words Kama Sutra evoke a beguiling blend of the exotic and the erotic, conjuring up visions of large numbers of impractical, bizarre or even impossible lovemaking positions, writes Anne Hooper. In fact, the work describes only about two dozen positions, and most of these are relatively easy to accomplish if the woman is reasonably supple. But guilt-free sex and imaginative poses still do not address the endurance of the Kama Sutra. For many Westerners, the sutras offer an important perspective on lovemaking as an act of reverence. Positions are just a small section of the complete sutras, which focus on rituals, food, kisses, strokes, eye contact, and even love bites that are all designed to make sex more meaningful and therefore more pleasurable.
