Celtic Jewelry

For thousands of years the Celts dominated Mid and Western Europe. However, only recently has the importance of Celtic influence on the cultural, linguistic and artistic development of Europe become increasing relevant. Except in places such as Ireland and the Scottish Highlands the Celts as an identifiable race or ethnic group have long since disappeared. Due to the fact that all history/ culture of the Celts was communicated, little is actually known about them until contact was made with the Romans and Greeks. The Celts were generally well educated, particularly on topics such as religion, philosophy, geography and astronomy. The bravery of the Celts in battle is legendary. They often spurned body armor, going naked into battle. Celtic society was typically more equal in terms of gender roles. Women were on more or less equal footing as men, being accomplished warriors, merchants and rulers. Celtic knots or Celtic interlace were primarily used to decorate Bible manuscripts, monuments and jewelry. 
          Celtic knots have no beginning or end and are therefore complete loops.

Over the last few decades there has been an increasing interest in the old pagan beliefs. Celtic symbols are founded on the principles of feeling compassionate for Nature and her influence. Celtic magical beliefs are firmly embedded in the Earth herself and in the fundamental spirits that are the very core of all Nature. This includes the four basic Elements which make up Nature: Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

The ancient Celts had a vast knowledge of, and respect for, the healing and magical qualities of plants, stones and symbols. They knew and used the power flows of the Earth, trees and special outcroppings of rock. They called upon the elemental spirits, the 'little people' of the Irish, the gnomes and fairies of the British.

In Celtic Mythology it is believed that Nuada of the Silver Hand, had lost his hand in battle. The Irish God of healing Dian Cecht replaced his limp with a silver hand. In Celtic Mythology silver symbolizes healing.
